Two authenthic Austrian villages

Kötschach and the authentic Mauthen are two authentic Austrian villages, close to the Mediterranean Italy. Together they accommodate 3000 inhabitants. They provide many facilities and activities. Next to the house you can find the ski slope and a bit further away the tennis courts, football field, sauna, a wonderful heated subtropical swimming pool with outdoor pools and the two cozy village centers with many different shops, cafes, restaurants and three supermarkets.

Kötschach area

Kötschach-Mauthen is located between two mountain ranges and right next to the Italian border. The village is located at the end of the Gailtal and at the beginning of the Lesachtal. The roads and hiking trails in the village are flat, there are many alpine meadows and a wooded area. The village is ideal for cycling and walking, also for children and people who are less mobile.

In the adjacent Mauthen you will find the natural swimming pool, the climbing park and the Mauthner Klamm, where you can hike adventurously between the mountains and along the water. The hiking area high in the mountains is also easily accessible, as is the Geotrail, where you can discover the origin of the Alps yourself.

Kötschach-Mauthen is known  for its very clean air and is therefore also called an air spa. There is a lot of sunshine all year round, making the temperature ideal in both summer and winter.

Nearby

Within 15 minutes you are on the border with Italy. If you drive 1 hour and 45 minutes further, you will be in Grado on the Venetian coast.

The warmest lake in Austria, the Presseggersee, is easily accessible by car. You can enjoy swimming here in the summer. There is also a lot to do for children in the Erlebnis Park.

Rich history

The Gailtal has a rich history of terrestrial base plates, on the geological border with Africa. The Roman trade route Via Julia Augusta ran through Kötschach-Mauthen. You will find many events, museums and relics along this route with information from this period.

The Pressegger See

The Pressegger See can be found just east of Hermagor, in the Gailtal in Carinthia. The lake is called the ‘bathtub’ of the Gailtal by the local people. This is due to the high temperature of the lake, which can reach up to 28 degrees! The Pressegger See is situated at 560 vertical meters and is about 55 hectares in size. The deepest point is 13 meters, but on average the lake is about 3 meters deep. The Pressegger See is a true family destination.

Facilities at the Pressegger See

You will find several beaches around the Pressegger See where you can relax in the summer. Of course, in addition to relaxing on the beach and swimming in the lake, you can also rent a sup or canoe. Also nice: take part in a surf lesson! You should definitely not miss one sight at the Pressegger See: 1. Kärtner Erlebnispark. This adventure park is one large playground with several fun attractions.

Carinthia

Every year, numerous holidaymakers choose this popular region in Austria. Besides being the most southern federal state in Austria, it is also the most rich in water thanks to the more than 1,200 lakes. The southern location and the many hours of sunshine ensure a Mediterranean climate. In addition to clear lakes, Carinthia has numerous impressive mountains.

Mountain world Nassfeld

Near Hermagor you will find the mountain world of Nassfeld, on the border with Italy. In summer you can use 3 lifts, which all go to a different top. From the mountain stations you will find several hiking trails, cycle paths, mountain huts and playgrounds for the children. The Millennium Express is the easiest to reach, this gondola departs from Tröpolach and goes to the top of the Madritsche. Here you will find the Aqua Trail, an adventure trail where you pass various water installations. This is a nice walk especially for the children. For those looking for a slightly more challenging challenge, there is via ferrata Däumling, about 500 meters long and at the top you will be rewarded by fantastic views. In this versatile nature reserve you will find many more fun activities, such as a summer toboggan run, playground, cycling and hiking trails, nice mountain huts, many beautiful viewpoints and a climbing park with cable car. In addition to the Millennium Express, you can also use the Gartnerkofel and Madritschenlift. For both lifts you have to drive a little further into the mountains along Nassfelder Sträße.

Lesachtal

Waterfalls, vast alpine meadows, forests and impressive mountain landscapes, you will find it all there. Kötschach-Mauthen is located at the beginning of the Lesachtal. The most unspoilt valley in Europe. An environment that exudes tranquility and allows you to enjoy the beautiful nature. The Austrian traditions are still very important here and are maintained by the local population.

Weissensee

You can enjoy hiking, cycling and swimming around the Weissensee. You will find an extensive network of more than 200 kilometers of hiking trails. You can also practice all kinds of sports. Water skiing, sup, surfing and kayaking are possible. There is a diving school and you can rent pedal boats, sailing and rowing boats from various rental companies.

In winter, the Weissensee turns into Europe’s largest frozen lake. The Dutch alternative Elfstedentocht takes place here every year at the end of January.
